The best ways to prepare for TEF Canada

There’s no shortcut to a higher NCLC level, but there are smart ways to spend your study time. Here’s our honest order, starting with the materials from the people who run the test.
  1. 1

    1. Start with the official materials

CCI Paris Île-de-France publishes preparation advice for each TEF test on lefrancaisdesaffaires.fr, and says you can prepare at home, online or at a test centre. Official material shows you the real instructions and screens.

  2. 2

    2. Learn the format cold

Know the timings (60, 40, 60 and 15 minutes), that listening plays each recording once with no going back, and the word minimums for writing (80 and 200). Our TEF Canada guide has it all on one page.

  3. 3

    3. Do timed comprehension practice

Aim for about a minute and a half per reading question. Use our free reading practice and listening practice, and never leave a question blank: wrong answers cost nothing.

  4. 4

    4. Write to the clock and get feedback

Write section A in 25 minutes and section B in 35, then have a teacher or fluent speaker mark it. Our writing prompts give you topics.

  5. 5

    5. Speak out loud, with a partner

Run 5-minute information calls and 10-minute convincing tasks with a partner playing the examiner. See our speaking prompts.

  6. 6

    6. Add real French every day

Canadian French radio, podcasts and news train your ear for real voices and accents, which our browser voice can’t fully reproduce.

  7. 7

    7. Consider a class for writing and speaking

Comprehension you can practise alone; production improves fastest with feedback. Our French classes page can put you in touch with schools.

What we’d skip

  • Anything claiming to have “real exam questions”. TEF subjects are confidential, and sharing them is prohibited.
  • Memorized essays. Section B asks you to react to a specific statement; a pasted template reads as off topic.
